Abstract: Tooth cementum annulation is continuous and rhythmic plate layers during the development process of cementum formation. There was interval layer between plate layers, which forms a shape like tree ring as light and dark rings. The number of cementum annulation can be calculated by observing tooth longitudinal grinding using transmission electron microscopy and optical microscope, which is changed along with the age and periodontal disease. Cementum annulation can be used as a method to estimate age. It has been widely applied in many fields, such as forensic dentistry, archaeology, and anthropology. This article will discuss the research progress on the tooth cementum annulation from four aspects: the count of the cementum ring, the factors that affect the number of the cementum, the application of the cementum ring, and the comparison of predicting age by cementum and bone.
