Abstract: The introduction of reciprocating single file is a breakthrough in the concept of root canal preparation. The application of thermal-treated nickel-titanium alloy enables this concept to be implemented in clinic. With superior properties and short learning curve, reciprocating nickel-titanium instruments have been widely used clinically. This article reviews the design characteristics and clinical operation properties of four reciprocating single-file systems.

Key words: reciprocating motion, shaping ability, fracture resistance, apical debris extrusion, dentinal microcracks
