Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the effect of tooth extraction on fistula formation in tongue cancer patients who underwent radical surgery. Methods: The patients with tongue cancer who underwent radical surgery using an anterolateral thigh flap were recruited from January 2017 to January 2020 in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Second Xiangya Hospital. The participants were divided into 2 groups, based on whether the extraction of mandibular anterior teeth was performed with disconnecting mandible. Results: A total of 243 patients with tongue cancer were recruited, of whom 222 were male and 21 were female. The mean age of these patients was (50.38±10.21) years (rang 26 to 71). Although the incidence of experimental group(5.7%)was higher than that of control group(1.5%), no significant differences were found(P>0.05). In the Logistic regression model for the occurrence of fistula, the No. of veins anastomosis(P=0.0061), flap compromise (P<0.0001), and tooth extraction(P=0.0049) were found to be associated with fistula. Conclusion: The reserve of tooth in tongue cancer patients who underwent radical surgery with disconnecting mandible could prevent the occurrence of fistula.
