Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of the submental island flap in the reparation of retromolar and soft palate defects. Methods: Retromolar and soft palate defects resulted by extended resection due to oral malignant neoplasm were reconstructed with the submental island flaps in 26 cases. Results: In our study, flap necrosis occurred in 2 out of 26 cases. Donor sites gained primary healing in all cases. 21 patients were followed up from 6 to 45 months. All these patients were satisfied with the long-term functions (speech and swallowing) and cosmetic outcomes. No local recurrence was found during follow-up, and no flap necrosis occurred during the radiotherapy. Conclusion: The submental island flap is a feasible option for repairing retromolar and soft palate defects in treating oral malignant neoplasm.
