Clearup Effects of Nickel-titanium Rotary Instrument and Ultrasonic Irrigation on Endotoxin Level in Root Canals of Chronic Apical Periodontitis

Abstract: Objective: To study the clearup effects of nickel-titanium rotary instrument and ultrasonic irrigation on the endotoxin level in root canals of chronic apical periodontitis. Methods: Thirty maxillary anterior teeth clinically diagnosed with chronic apical periodontitis were randomized into three groups. Group A was prepared with nickel-titanium rotary instrument. Group B was given one minute ultrasonic irrigation with sterile distilled water after root canal preparation with nickel-titanium rotary instrument. Group C was given one minute ultrasonic irrigation with 3% NaClO after root canal preparation with nickel-titanium rotary instrument. The concentration of endotoxin in the root canals was detected before and after treatments. Results: There were no statistical differences between three groups before treatments (P>0.05). The endotoxin concentrations in the three groups were (8.52±2.04) EU/mL, (1.61±0.41) EU/mL, and (0.22±0.11) EU/mL, respectively after treatments (P<0.05). Conclusion: Nickel-titanium rotary instrument and ultrasonic irrigation has a good effect on the clearup effect of endotoxin level in the root canals, and the effect with ultrasonic irrigation for one minute with 3% NaClO was better than ultrasonic irrigation for one minute with sterile distilled water.
