Abstract: Root canal therapy is currently the most effective and commonly used method for the treatment of pulp and periapical diseases. To improve therapeutic efficacy, various auxiliary irrigation techniques have been increasingly applied. Erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser-activated irrigation (LAI) has become one of the research hotspots. This paper reviews Er:YAG laser-assisted root canal irrigation, with a focus on photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS) and shock wave enhanced emission photoacoustic streaming (SWEEPS) techniques, as well as their latest research progress.
