Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract. Except for predominant bowel symptoms, patients may also have oral manifestations, of which periodontal disease has gained increasing attention. The pathogeneses of IBD and periodontal disease can both be related to disturbance of local microbial and immune homeostasis. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to summarize the evidences and possible mechanisms of the effect IBD may have on periodontal disease.
