Abstract: Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.gingivalis) is involved in the occurrence and development of various diseases including periodontal tissue infections, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and etc.Fimbriae is an important virulence factor of P.gingivalis and can assist it to adhere and invade host cells.P.gingivalis strains are classified into six types based on divergent nucleotide sequences of the fimA gene (types Ⅰ, Ⅰb, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ, and Ⅴ).The pathogenicity of P.gingivalis strains with different fimA genotypes was different. This review focuses on the recent progress in the study of different fimA genotypes and related diseases of P.gingivalis fimbriae.
