Abstract: Objective: To investigate the expression of Rab38 in oral squamous cell carcinoma and its clinical significance. Methods: Rab38 mRNA expression was detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) in 60 matched OSCC and adjacent non-tumorous tissues. Expression of Rab38 was evaluated by immunohistochemistry in 149 cases of OSCC and matched adjacent non-tumorous tissues. Relationships between protein expression level and clinicopathological parameters were evaluated. Results: Rab38 was over-expressed in OSCC tissues. Clinical analysis indicated that high expression of Rab38 was obviously associated with TNM stage and lymph node metastasis. OSCC patients with high levels of Rab38 expression had shorter overall survival (OS). Multivariate cox regression analysis demonstrated that Rab38 expression remained an independent prognosis. Conclusion: Overexpression of Rab38 is closely related to poor prognosis. Rab38 may contribute to the development of OSCC, and may be used as a biomarker for evaluating outcomes.
