Abstract: Transglutaminase 2 (TG2), also known as tissue transglutaminase, is a widely distributed, protein cross-linking enzyme with multiple biochemical functions. TG2 has been reported to involve in etiopathogenesis of several pathological conditions and the inhibition of enzyme activity is potential for therapeutic management of these diseases. However, there is no review on the relationship between TG2 and oral diseases. In this paper, the role of TG2 in three oral diseases, including chronic periodontitis, drug induced gingival overgrowth, and oral submucous fibrosis is reviewed, which is to provide a new insight to the therapy of some oral diseases.
