Abstract: In the oral environment, plaque bacteria, as the initiator of periodontal tissue inflammation, play an important role in the development of periodontitis. Quorum sensing signaling molecules are important molecules that could perform signal transduction between bacteria to effectively regulate population density and promote biofilm development. Different species of bacteria have different quorum-sensing systems, but autoinducer 2 system is the most important universal quorum-sensing system of periodontal pathogens. In recent years, many studies have shown that quorum sensing inhibitors can effectively attenuate quorum sensing between bacteria and inhibit and reduce the formation of plaque biofilms between periodontal pathogens and the expression of their virulence factors. In this paper, the research progress in the effects of autoinducer 2 quorum sensing signaling molecules on periodontitis is reviewed.
