Abstract: The placentas of healthy pregnancies were always considered to be bacteria-free environment. But novel findings characterized a unique microbiome niche in the placenta with molecular approaches, which may be most akin to the human oral microbiome. The increased oral bacteria detection in placental tissue, suggesting a hematogenous spread of bacteria that originates from oral microflora may be associated with intrauterine infection. The article aims to review current researches about the microbe from oral cavity invade the placenta and its potential relationship with adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs).
